Title: Shining stars in the art world – four new artists the world is talking about.

Duration: 1 hour and 15 mins.

Languages: English/Hebrew

Target audience: Art lovers, proud feminists (males included), anybody who likes to be up to date.

Keywords: Contemporary art, feminist art, woman artists, gender fluid.

Who are the artists the whole world is talking about? After centuries of male supremacy, the new stars are women artists. Finally, the time is right for women to stand out in the art world and we are currently experiencing a wave of change that seeks to correct the historical distortion.

Make no mistake – the journey to equality is still a long one – both in terms of the ratio of women artists to  be included in museum collections, museum exhibitions and especially art sales. The historical sale record of art by a woman artist is one tenth the record of the most expensive work by a male artist.

In this lecture, Debby Luzia will review the reasons for these gaps and the moves that led to the shift we are experiencing. An important part of the shift is the rise of African and Asian artists as part of a global trend of inclusion.

The artists reviewed in this lecture:

Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Tchabalala Self, Mikalene Thomas and Zanel Moholi.
